During the meeting on January 21, they informed the Minister about escalation of situation in Donbas and expressed the standing regarding the necessity to increase sanctions against the Russian Federation as a country that supports terrorism.  

The people’s deputies of Ukraine told that the Verkhovna Rada approved the address to the parliaments and governments of the EU member states asking them to include “LPR” and “DPR” to the list of terrorist organizations and impose sanctions on their leaders. They addressed the Danish Party to take a unanimous standing on this issue with Ukraine. Politicians informed about the reforms carried out in Ukraine, particularly in the legislative sector, and about government’s activity in resolving the problems of frontier men.   

The Parties discussed also preparation to the international donor conference on rebuilding Donbas that will be held in Ukraine in March – April.

Martin Lidegaard stressed that Denmark and the EU are waiting for Ukraine to implement reforms, thereat realizing the complexity of the situation in Ukraine, including in economy, due to the conflict in Donbas. He expressed solidarity with the standing of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko regarding the necessity to bring all the Parties back to fulfillment of Minsk agreements and implementation of the peace plan.  

The Parties discussed possible joint steps in counteracting Russian propaganda, as well as the possibility of supporting Ukraine in different international institutions. Minister told about the common initiative of Denmark, Great Britain, Estonia and Lithuania in the context of launching a media project to provide European and Russian audience with objective information. He raised the question of importance of reforms in the energy sector.

The same day in Copenhagen, Ukrainian deputies opened a photography exhibition of Ukrainian photographers “Women: war and peace. Donbas: war and peace”. The event was held with participation of Foreign Affairs Minister of Denmark Martin Lidegaard and under the auspices of the National Association of Journalists of Ukraine. 

In the course of the event, Iryna Herashchenko stressed that Ukraine will with all possible means withstand Russian propaganda, where information war remains one of the key components of a hybrid warfare conducted by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. She said that the conflict in the East was inspirited from the outside and terrorists are well equipped with weapon of Russian origin: “There are numerous facts testifying that regular troops of the Russian army are present on our territory and terrorists are financed on the part of the Russian Federation. Today the situation is escalating and aggravating. That is why Ukraine is more than ever in need of international support and the increase of sanctions against the aggressor state – Russia.”

She thanked Denmark for solidarity after the tragedy in Volnovakha. Iryna Herashchenko stressed that Ukraine insists on the necessity of bringing all the Parties back to unconditional fulfillment of Minsk agreements and implementation of the peace plan of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko “as a single realistic scenario of reaching peace in Donbas.”

Foreign Affairs Minister of Denmark stressed the importance of joint counteraction of the EU and Ukraine to Russian propaganda that distorts reality. He deems it important to take information measures and carry out actions in the context of providing true and objective information about Donbas. Martin Lidegaard named photography exhibition that provides a first hand information to be topical. He expressed support to Ukrainian people and solidarity with Ukraine. Special emphasis was laid on the situation with Donetsk airport. Minister recollected that during his visit to Donetsk in March 2014 he was there and he is shocked with the scope of ruination of this object.      

The people’s deputy Mariia Ionova informed those present about the humanitarian situation in Donbas and told that women and children are among the first who suffer from terrorists shelling. She informed also about the top priority humanitarian needs of Donbas in the sphere of medicine and assistance to frontier men.
